From Compliance to Inclusion: Working Together to Improve Access and Campus climate for Students with Disabilities
Dr. Allison Fleming – Penn State University

Allison R. Fleming, PhD, CRC is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Human Services and Counselor Education at Penn State University. Allison got her Master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from Springfield College in 2004 and became a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) that same year. She has worked in the rehabilitation field as a counselor, researcher, and educator for the last 14 years. Prior to pursing an academic career, Allison worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Boston. Following that experience, she also worked for the Institute for Community Inclusion providing continuing education in best practices in employment services to rehabilitation counselors and community rehabilitation staff around New England. She received her PhD in Rehabilitation Counselor Education at Michigan State University in 2012, and has been on the faculty at the University of Kentucky and Penn State.

Allison’s research related to college students with disabilities has spanned several topics, including student experiences, factors that support intent to persist, student satisfaction, and academic performance. Her work in this area, informed by her counseling experience and work with students, focuses on the role and of academic institutions as well as students themselves in achieving better graduation and career outcomes for students with disabilities.

COLLEGE CREDIT PLUS AND STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES – THE PATHWAYS TO ACCOMMODATIONS

Jill Anderson, Campus Advocate – Columbus State Community College

This program will address the content area of professional development. Participants will gain an understanding of the laws governing accommodations decisions for College Credit Plus students. Participants will also identify strategies to support students participating in College Credit Plus on campus.

INFUSING INCLUSION ACROSS AN EVOLVING ECOSYSTEM

Amanda Weyant – Director, Kent State University
Dr. Michael Kavulic, Kent State University

This program will address the content area of professional development. As college campuses grow and students become more complex, accessibility can no longer be seen as the sole responsibility of the disability services office. Participants will gain a better understanding of how to build intentional networks and foster sustainable relationships with university partners to create an accessible campus. . Participants will also identify strategies to gather and analyze key data to support accessibility initiatives on campus.

ADOPTING A PROACTIVE MINDSET, MOVING BEYOND VERIFICATION AND APPROVAL

This program will address the content area of professional development. Participants will understand the unique advising needs of students registered with disabilities services. Participants will gain strategies to incorporate proactive advising into campus disability services offices.

WHERE ADA MEETS TITLE IX

This program will address the content area of professional development. Participants will examine how to bridge disability and sexual violence supportive services on campus to serve survivors of sexual violence. Participants will understand applicable ADA and Title IX laws and implications for serving survivors on campus.

This program will address the content area of professional development. Participants will understand strategies to assist student become self-advocates during the transition between high school and post-secondary education. Participants will understand a customer service model of disability services that incorporates advocacy, collaboration, and innovation strategies to support students.

EMBRACING HELICOPTER PARENTS: ASSETS NOT ADVERSARIES

Amy Osborne – Visiting Professor, Antioch College

This program will address the content area of professional development. Participants will understand laws regarding FERPA and Confidentiality surrounding Disability Services. Participants will explore ways to utilize a students’ existing supports while teaching self-advocacy skills during the transition to post-secondary education.

RESILIENCE ISN’T JUST FOR STUDENTS! WE NEED IT TOO.

Dr. Elizabeth Harrison – University of Dayton

This program will address the content area of professional development. Participants will understand the concept of resilience and learn tools for building resilience within themselves. Participants will also explore ways to create work environments that nurture resilience.

LIFE ON CAMPUS WITH ANIMALS: A COLLABORATION BETWEEN DISABILITY SERVICES AND HOUSING

Enjie Hall – Director of Campus Accessibility and Student Disability Services, University of Toledo
Bradley Menard– Director of Housing, University of Toledo

This program will address the content area of professional development. Participants will have an in-depth understanding of what qualifies a student to be eligible for an ESA as a disability accommodation. Participants will understand the components necessary for responsibilities/expectations for students and dog training organizations. Participants will learn methods to problem-solve situations that may arise.

AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO ELECTRONIC ACCESSIBILITY

Chris Edwards – Client Success Manager, Blackboard Inc.

This program will address the content area of professional development. Participants will identify key stakeholders for electronic accessibility across campus. Participants will apply UC’s method of prioritization to identify areas of focus at their own institution. Participants will learn about tools for enhancing capacity in their faculty and academic units. Participants will select existing processes at their schools in which they may be able to incorporate accessibility.
